Vytautas the Great Bridge
For a long time, this bridge was the only connection between The Old Town and the left shore of Nemunas river.
In the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the wooden pontoon bridge across Nemunas used to be called the longest in the world. The title was given by the locals, as it would take 13 days to reach the other shore! Surprisingly, river flood was not the case. During that period, Aleksotas side of the river belonged to Prussia, while the current city center side was the territory of The Russian Empire. The bridge was not the only obstacle on the way - due to the differences of the calendars, once having left from Kaunas in the end of September, a person would reach Aleksotas in October. |
Nevertheless, we highly encourage to cross the bridge in exchange of getting your wish come true. All you have to do is to make a wish and sacrifice a coin after having crossed the bridge. In 13 days it is said to come true.
