The Old Dock
The Old Dock on Nemunas river was build a few hundreds of years ago, right beside the Vytautas church. Sails and later even steamships would be moored there. The ships would bring cargo to the other cities and also transport the excited citizens ready for an adventure.
The harbour in Kaunas was the only one to maintain the trade between The Russian Empire and the foreign ports. There was a constant delivery of goods to and from Prussia. Around 5000 ships would visit Kaunas every year. Due to its importance, in the memories of the travellers, Kaunas was titled as a sea harbour, and this tiny little old dock used to be the very spot of the trade. |
Not only Kaunas was famous for welcoming the ships – a huge ship-factory used to be there as well, which would actively produce during the Interwar period and the Soviet times. Very few citizens are aware that more than a hundred ships would be built in our city and that Kaunas used to be the second largest port of Lithuania.
Nowadays, it is possible to take a boat ride to Kulautuva or Zapyskis at the dock, and numerous events take place at the amphitheatre nearby – everyone can choose the best way to enjoy Nemunas river.
