Nemunas island
Nemunas island is a wonderful Nature’s treasure. The island on Nemunas river was already noted in the oldest maps of Kaunas area, however, there were no settlements on the island up until the World War I. The very first documented object was a winter dock, built in 1917, in order to protect the ships from the ice-drift. It continued on working until 1970.
During the Interwar, Nemunas island used to be full of life, hosting the yacht club of Lithuania and numerous swimming centers. The citizens would come to relax on a beach or attend all kinds of events, including a horse race at a huge hippodrome. |
The length of the island is more than 1,5 kilometers and nowadays can be reached by crossing one of the 4 bridges (2 of them only suited for pedestrians). The eastern part of the island is known for a spectacular Zalgiris arena, frequently holding basketball matches, concerts or other events.
