Kaukas stairs
This place recalls a three-parted swimming pool, a fountain, shooting as high as 6 meters up towards the sky, gold fishes, water lilies and the elegant ladies, wearing their classy swimsuits and sun hats, chattering in a sunlight... Everything suggesting the Golden Age of Kaunas city during the Interwar period, as the temporary capital of Lithuania.
The area used to be a real oasis of peace and relaxation, right in the middle of a city business. The main gem of Kaukas alee are the stairs, which connect Zaliakalnis district with the city center. A stream Kaukas used to flow down the Zaliakalnis hill to the current Square of Independence, creating a tiny Kaukas pond. The stairs were likely named after it. |
However, there is also another version for the origins of the name. Some claim, that Kaukas - a creature in Lithuanian mythology - lives there. According to the legends, it has a shape of a little man, who is a real sweet-tooth and supposedly brings the prosperity, good harvest and fertility to the people.
In a place, still vibrant of the glorious past memories, and infused with the charm of a fairytale, Kaukas sprinkles the fuss of joy for all the willing hearts. Take a seat, let the worries fade away and give yourself a chance to see the hidden beauty.
