Dear Future Self

Dear Future Self - A conversation with Generation Z about the skills of the future

Between July 6-15th, 2021, in the city of Călărași, Romania, 50 young people from 10 European countries started together a serious, yet playful discussion about what skills the next generations will need to adapt to future jobs, during an youth exchange mobility co-financed by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

Ten youth organizations operating in the European Union, the Republic of Northern Macedonia and Turkey initiated a multicultural learning context for 50 participants. During the 10 days long youth exchange, the youngsters were encouraged to explore 8 key competences that will be needed in the future on the labour market and analyze how educational programs for the development of essential skills are one of the solutions to support young NEETs from their communities and facilitate their access to the labor market.

As a result of the learning mobility, the young people joined forces to prototype a collection of skills acceleration challenges, which will be tested in 10 local workshops with 500 young people and will launch the digital campaign "Dear Future Self" to raise awareness of the skills of the future.

"According to the World Economic Forum, 65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately end up working in completely new job types that don't yet exist. At present, a great challenge and European concern is to reduce the gap between young people's individual skills and labor market requirements. Therefore, the formal education system must be adjusted to the signals and requirements coming from the labor market. In this context, youth organizations play an important role in reducing this disparity through cross-sectoral collaboration and non-formal educational programs for the development of future skills. ", said Luminița Ene, project coordinator of the Dear Future Self project.

During the youth exchange, the youngsters got to experience a selection of interactive methods, specific to education in a non-formal context, to support them to develop their ESC skills such as: problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, people management, team dynamics, emotional intelligence, negotiation, cognitive flexibility. At the end of the learning process, all participants received European Youthpass certificates attesting to their acquired skills.
The Dear Future Self project encourages young people to embrace intentional learning, to become agile students and global citizens, equipped with the skills needed to navigate social, economic, academic and personal challenges.

The project co-financed by the Erasmus+ Programme takes place between February and November 2021 and is coordinated by the Monomyths Association, in partnership with Sdrujenie “Maverick” (Bulgaria), Human Being (Turkey), MOTHER FLOWER (Slovakia), LUMEN (Croatia), Tarptautinis bendradarbiavimo centras (Lithuania), Sfera International (Republic of North Macedonia), Xano Channel asociación para el desarrollo comunitario (Spain), Youthfully Yours Gr (Greece) and Avatud Ühiskond MTÜ (Estonia).
